What Is Holistic Fitness?

The word holistic describes a perception of life. It means to see ourselves as whole beings who function best when all of our "parts" are connected. In the area of health and fitness, these parts include three main branches of ourselves:

Mind-body health. This is where you experience life most intimately, inside your physical body, your personal thoughts, and feelings. This level of being is very concrete and personal, and is represented by the aura's energy chakras  1, 2, 3, & 5. Methods of caring for the mind and body include diet, exercise, education, and activities that strengthen and balance us.

2. Social-emotional-fiscal health. This is how you share yourself with the world, through socializing and exchanging resources with others. This level of being is more fluid and fluctuating, though we still can see it with our eyes, or we can see the effects of it (emotions) in ourselves and others. It is represented by the energy chakras 2, 3 & 4. Methods of caring for this area include values clarification, learning to process emotions in healthy ways, self-awareness and self-esteem activities, and choosing work, leisure and social events that contribute to the health of ourselves and others.

3.Spiritual-energetic health. This is a level of experience that deals with what cannot
be immediately seen by concrete, tangible sources. It is the realm of intuition, God, our attitudes and beliefs. Here, we make choices regarding what to believe, which then affects us in all areas. This level of being can be sensed by others, and is where we get "gut feelings" about ourselves and others. It relates to the energy chakras  2, 4, 6 & 7. This level of being is strengthened by energy activities (such as visualization, prayer, and sacred rituals), listening to our hearts, and making healthy choices regarding faith.  It is not so important which religion or philosophy that we choose, but rather how we choose to use it. Most of the major religions teach paths to love and harmony. These same religions are misused when people twist their principles into excuses for harming others.

All of our branches contribute to our core sense of meaning, purpose, joy and creativity, which are essential elements of health and well-being.

Maintaining or restoring fitness and good health consists of three phases. The first and most important one is to simply be aware that we are already whole in spite of any surface symptoms. Having this attitude still requires that we make changes needed for happiness and health, but it gives also us a power, an edge, and a motivational strength. Such strength is called unconditional love, but until we give it to ourselves, we will not be able to receive it from anyone else.

The second and third phases of holistic fitness are:

2. Treating the symptoms by minimizing or eliminating outward signs of pain and discomfort;
3. Treating the cause, by healing energy blockages that help to create our problem.
